THE AGE OF MIRACLES

Age of Miracles- Karen Walker

3/5

This book is a coming of age story of a 12 year old girl during a global crisis. The author examines the consequences of the earth’s slowing on society and how fragile society really is.
It was a unique story line and written well overall, but the book started to become a little redundant for me, as nothing was really happening. It was a slow book and I think it was meant to be that way as it adds to the overall theme, however it just wasn’t a book that I kept wanting to pick up. With that being said, it was still a quick read. If coming-of-age stories are your thing, definitely pick this book up!

Side note: This is probably one of the most unique hardcover books I’ve seen; there are holes in the dust jacket that allow the hard binding to show through.

THE FAULT IN OUR STARS

The Fault in Our Stars – John Green

5/5

The Fault in Our Stars was a great book and definitely unexpectedly good considering the rather typical, tragic, cliche love story about cancer kids. I was worried it would be a rehash of A Walk to Remember, but trust me it was not. The plot was pretty predictable, but I think it’s the writing style and the characters that really made this book so successful.

By far, it is my most favourite John Green novel (I wasn’t a huge fan of Looking for Alaska). John Green has a way of stringing words together so eloquently in a way that I think no one else has. The eulogies within the book were my favourite part and definitely started the water works. I think every girl reading this book had a crush on Augustus Waters and/or wanted to have Hazel’s sarcastic sense of humor.

This story is a rollercoaster of emotions, one moment it is hilarious, the next it will pull at your heart strings. I needed a few days to recover from this book. If you haven’t read this book yet (where have you been??) you need to pick it up right now! If you are new to John Green’s writing, I would recommend reading this one first.
